I had a work thing from 5-8 am. Yall. It was so good. I HATE work things that are in the evening. I would gladly wake up at 4 am every day if it meant I could be done early. I gotta send an email about making this work for a thing I'm supposed to do mid-February.

In that same line of thought, I had forgotten how good I feel when I get up early. I've been lazy and getting up at 6 am and I have felt like shit every god damn day. Today I got up at 4:15 am and I feel AMAZING. Note to self: do this more.

I am waiting FOREVER to get my W2 from my former employer. I hate it. I would much prefer to just be done with all this bullshit. Like, my unofficial goal every year is to have my taxes filed and finished by Jan 31. But ~legally~ places have until Feb 1 to put stuff in the mail. Rude af, tbqh. I am very jealous of EVERYONE EVERYWHERE ELSE where you have file-free taxes. Like, the gov't already has all my info. Why the fuck do I have to do all this work? Just kidding, I know why. The tax software lobby is INSANELY POWERFUL and they have made sure to make it so that we have to not only do all the paperwork redundantly, but that (unless you make under a certain amount as a household) you have to fucking pay for it. I am old enough to remember filling out my taxes on paper and doing it all for free. SIGH. The Good Old Days, I guess.

Anyway I'm off to watch ASMR and relax. I had a migraine the last two days and my brain is free and clear today and I'd like to get as much sensory satisfaction as possible out of this day.

We got 12.5" (31.25 cm) of snow. It has been a Whole Thing. It's okay, though. Spouse stayed home both Monday and yesterday and unfortunately had to go to work today just to find out that he has to work Saturday now, too. I guess a lot of people didn't go in to work Monday or Tuesday. I mean, we were getting a foot of snow, what did they expect?

I have a terrible headache and I'm just hoping these meds kick in before I'm supposed to start teaching in 1.25 hours.

I don't have anything else to report. I guess that's what happens when you wake up super nauseous with a nasty sinus headache. It'll be fine.

I hope that I get all of the paperwork I need so I can do our taxes this evening. I hate having to wait. I like to be filed and done before the end of January.

 Snow Globe

It is absolutely bonkers to be in the middle of a blizzard. We're in line to receive a foot (30 cm) of snow by the end of it. I'm going out to shovel in an hour. It really is pretty awe-inspiring to watch snow come down at 1-2" (2.5-5 cm) an hour.

I am having a lot of feelings that I don't feel like posting about. I'm just tired. And I don't know how to address any of it without... whatever. I don't want to talk about it.

I hope that the rest of this week is better.

Bought a really bougie paper shredder. I love it. I don't care.

We're almost done with another single for  toadlilies . I'm super excited. I wish my Waves plugins would stop being trash and resizing weird but I also don't care so fuck it I guess. I have this one damn plugin that won't accept how I've scaled my screen with 2 monitors and I don't actually ever change how it is set up, so I don't really mind. I have it the way I want it and I just stick it on.

I'm so exhausted but I haven't updated here in a minute cos...I'm exhausted. I'll try to be more of a person another time.

I know that the transition today doesn't mean anything.

But also it does.

And I'm going to watch every minute of it.

Well, maybe I'll tune away until this fuckface gets off my teevee.

Maybe I should go play a video game.

Anyway, I'm gonna go try to do stuff. I have music to work on and a proposal to start. I am gonna try to be a good and productive person.

I finished  Xenogenesis by Octavia E. Butler  yesterday and highly recommend it. I am now on to  Ubik by Philip K. Dick . I already chapter one and I'm enjoying it. I will admit I'm a PKD newb. Whereas my spouse has read...every(?????) PKD book I've only read  A Scanner Darkly , which I thoroughly enjoyed. And I even read it AFTER I saw the film. This is a rarity for me. Usually I'm that person who sees and is thoroughly disappointed in a screen adaptation. However I can say that the film is so good that I enjoyed it on rewatch even after reading the book. (There's a whole aside here about how the director, Richard Linklater, has no... compass(?) as a director. Other filmmakers you get a sense for the films they make, but he's all over the map. I suppose that's a good thing in its own way, it's just out of the ordinary. I'm one of those folks who enjoys bodies of work and that will never happen here because I loathe his comedies. All of them. I suppose I do love that he just makes the films he wants to make and sometimes they're  A Scanner Darkly  and sometimes they're..... School of Rock . Kudos to following your heart, Mr. Linklater.

An aside: I go back and forth on how to link to things like books and movies. Part of me wants to link to Wikipedia. It's not commercial and that's good. But also, I know I'm a person that will read spoilers accidentally if led to a link where that is a possibility, so I also feel like I should avoid it? Don't worry though, if I do decide to continue to link to websites where you can buy things I will NEVER EVER link to Bezos-land. Fuck that guy. I hope that  those 6,000 lovely folks in Alabama pull off unionizing their Amazon warehouse  cos fuck Jeff Bezos and his obscene pile of money and his stupid space dicks.

I should probably pop over to my work computer and see what's the what.

Holy moly.

So we spent a lot of time considering financial futures and we made some choices concerning my retirement account with my previous employer and yesterday I got to see the fruits of those choices. Today I got to put all of those fruits to work in our budget. It is a REALLY good day.

Oh, and we bought a new printer today. One that also copies, scan, and faxes (except I don't think I even have a phone outlet in this room, let alone one that is operational). And it's a LASER color printer. I hate inkjet printers.

I'm slowly working through re-wiring everything in this room in an attempt to minimize the amount of extension cords I'm using. It's..... a lot. This house is old and terrible. Lol.

I have left this open to update as I go throughout the day but I am excited to say that I finally finished putting my office together. I got a KVM switch for my monitors, I FINALLY settled on a set up for my music keyboard and my typing keyboard that I don't hate, and everything is tucked away and tidy. I should probably move my own PlayStation back in here at some point, but I kind of like having it in the bedroom. Idk, we'll see. Maybe I'll just wait for when I get my PS5.

Anyway, the room is done. I have a wonderful new printer that is FAST and QUIET. I put up my dorky timezone clocks. And we are now at a point financially where I don't want to curl up and die. So yay. I'll take it.

I have also learned that my aesthetic is "tidy chaos" cos like I like having a place for everything, but I will never be a minimalist. el oh el

 Dry Run

Today is the first day I train folks at night. First day for like a 2 month stretch. Sigh. It'll be fine, I hope. My biggest concern is that spouse sleeps in the next room and we took the doors off the rooms (our space is very small and this opened up the area TREMENDOUSLY) and I'm gonna end up keeping him up all night talking. Ffffffffff.

I also FINALLY TRIUMPHED in figuring out why Live 10 was being a fuck COMPLETELY on my own office set up, but working fine on spouse's recording set up. Turns out I completely overlooked activating one of the plug-ins. F. F. S.

But fuck it, at least it's solved. So now I can get to work on recording vocals for our next slates of songs. There are a lot. Hopefully I'll get my side of things all finished so that they can all come out soon.

I am just SO BAD at time management. So. Bad.

I'm trying really hard to not work until like 10 am cos I'm working 8:30-11:30 pm and it turns out IT IS REALLY HARD. I could be using this time to work on my proposal but honestly I'd rather die probably.

I ordered a KVM switch so that I can finally get my work computer onto my fancy mechanical keyboard and the giant teevee I bought for a monitor as well as the giant monitor that work sent me. It's gonna be a nice two-screen system. Once I figure out how to make it so that I can split the screen and not have to use the actual laptop screen. Can I disable a Mac laptop screen and just split on 2 other screens? WE SHALL SEE, I SUPPOSE.

ON that note, I'm gonna go eat a snack before I log in and start working.

Today is a good day, even though I didn't end up getting dental work done because there was A GAS LEAK.

I adulted real hard at work and got some stuff worked out. I'm going to have to work evenings for about 2 months, but it'll be okay. I negotiated a thing that I wanted and I feel really good about it. (By negotiated I mean I said "I'm doing this thing this way" and everyone was like "Yeah, okay no problem!" I am just so used to pushback I am still adjusting to just being taken seriously.

Oh, and I did the moral licensing thing and bought an object from THE WORST WEBSITE because, after hours and hours of research I could either order it from Somewhere Else and get it maybe in 2 months for $80 more, or I could get this thing I super duper need right now.

I think I'm going to read a book tonight. Or continue reading a book. I just feel like I deserve the reward of doing something relaxing. Maybe even more relaxing than a video game? Idk. I just feel really good today.

I did it. I finished the site overhaul. I fixed (I think) ALL of the misdirecting links. I am very proud of myself.

The way it is set up now I will be archiving, by hand, the previous month's posts onto their dedicated page at start of the following month. I actually excited about this. It gives me a moment of zen and a chance to look back.

I'm feeling okay about work despite

I'm rearranging my office again, finally. I can't get everything exactly how I want it, so I really just need to figure out how to get it good enough. I'm also considering buying another mechanical keyboard because swapping it back and forth between this machine and my work machine is ANNOYING. Idk who I am that I am willing to pay $170 to not be annoyed. That's pretty ridiculous. But here we are.

Anyway, I'm gonna cut this short. I need to rearrange my office an put away some things and put up some other things and make this less of a disaster. I have a bunch of stuff in a giant box that needs unboxed, and plants that need better placement.

 Get to Know

Turns out overhauling a website is tedious. And that the more complex I make the site the more tedious it becomes. It's fine. I am enjoying making this site better and more navigable. I also caught a ton of errors. Go figure. It just takes a while! So if you're finding links that go to weird places I KNOW. I'm working on it. lololololol. Do feel free to point them out, but I'll just say right now that the very last thing I'm doing is fixing the tags page.

I don't have much of anything to say about the coup attempt from Jan 6 other than Pelosi fucking sucks and I'm super irritated that she's giving that fuckface plenty of time to pardon all of those aggressors because shes's a coward who doesn't want to be the one with her name on an impeachment. Fuck.

In happier news: Sunday has become Bread Day. I make bread every week. It is soothing. I get immediate results. And it's tasty. I love it. If you have the time, tools, and bandwidth, I highly recommend baking bread.

I should work on finishing redecorating my office. And tidying. And working on my proposal. And and and and

Have a good Monday, everyone.

 This Is How

Well. Yesterday was a fucking day, wasn't it? I have no words. Or a lot of words. I didn't sleep. I am so fucking tired.

Unrelated: I have been having a meltdown all week because of an ASK at work that I was proposed and then have received no follow up. The Ask was Monday. Finally, this morning, I get invited to a meeting follow up for Friday. For a thing I am supposed to start Monday. Tech people are the fucking worst.

Also unrelated: our latest single is now on Spotify. I would prefer BandCamp and I need to do more to actually promote on and from there but also LISTEN TO US ANYWHERE AND TELL OTHER PEOPLE ABOUT US.

The label link is to the left (Oh My Golly Records). Each music project is linked there and each music project site has links to every streaming service I could access as well as embeds of everything from BandCamp.

Y'all. Yesterday was a lot.

 A Part of the Self

archived:  05 January 2021
tagged:  Writing

I have actually been very busy on here the last few days, it was just reworking a bunch of back end stuff. (That's a really dumb tech way of saying I was changing coding.) Anyway, I portioned out all the entries onto monthly pages and I really like it. It is good. Now I can do updates on here and the coding work isn't bogged down by hundreds (literally almost; This is entry #191) of old posts with links and all that jazz. So yay. Check it out, I guess. (There are now links to go backward and forward through all the old stuff in month-sized chunks.) I was considering doing just 10-entry pages, but I like having the time stamp more prominent. I still wish I had a calendar somewhere and honestly it's not that I can't do it, it's just that it's that much more work and I don't feel like it. At least, not right now.

BTW, that thing that I thought was a spider bite? Yeah, it is the sloughing of my skin from when I spilled boiling water all over my foot. Whoops. Oh well. I am pretty sure I feel sick because this is the time of year where I live on a steady diet of sinus meds. I don't know why it is this way. I am just glad I remembered before I fell into the "Oh no it's COVID" spiral. Lol.

I am going to add a link to our label site to my column on the left, but I'm kind of flummoxed as to whether I want to make it yellow (makes sense thematically, I do external links in yellow), but if I put it in the middle of the list (to fit thematically color-wise) will I hate it???????? Idk. I was thinking to put it at the bottom but I don't want to devalue it by putting it last. My life is hard.

I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing at work and I am working hard to not resent it. Someday I won't feel this way, right????? I really like everyone I work with, and I like the IDEA of what my job is SUPPOSED to be. I just don't have actual parameters and nothing to work from and boy oh boy is it A LOT.

Speaking of music: we have a new  toadlilies  single out on our vanity label  Oh My Golly! Records . So far it's only on  BandCamp  cos apparently distro'ing anything on a weekend is impossible. So whatever it'll be all of the places ~eventually~.

I should really get emails set up because I just don't, but I also don't know what I want to do. Paying NameCheap per-domain for email is more expensive than upgrading to the lowest paid tier on ProtonMail. But Tutanota is even cheaper than ProtonMail but THE IDEA of migrating all of my email AGAIN to another platform (I would definitely be leaving Protonmail for Tutanota) makes me want to just overpay ProtonMail. The great debate: work vs money. But Tutanota is SO MUCH CHEAPER that it's fucking stupid to stick with ProtonMail. I can get 5 aliases for $12 a year on Tutanota vs 5 email addresses for $48 a year for ProtonMail. SIGH. I guess I need to start migrating stuff. FML

I still feel sick, though not as sick as two days ago. At the end of the day on Wednesday I took off my sock and I had a nasty spider bite. So of course I feel like trash. Still better than having covid, so I'm not complaining.

I don't have a whole lot to say. I'm going to finally get around to separating entries into month pages so that I don't have to deal with how bogged down writing on this ever-lengthening pages gets.

I hope everyone had a safe and socially distanced new year. So few of us actually seem to care. I hope if you are reading this, you are one of those of us who do.
